Process
From the beginning, we knew that we were interested in a creating a video or a short film because we believed this would be the most concise and clear way of including all the themes we have learned. While brainstorming it came to light that Ben is a talented piano player, and he was interested in using this talent to make a strong video. Once we centered the idea around Ben playing the piano and using sounding, many ideas started to flow creating an elaborate theme.
Synopsis
We centered of our video around the ideas of unity, life and death, which we used music to express. The video starts of with Ben walking in the room with the piano, when he reaches the piano he begins to play harmony of the song “Heart and Soul”. After playing alone for a short time, Berkley enters and begins to play the melody. The two playing “Heart and Soul” together is symbolic, showing unity. While playing together the music speeds up and the mood is that of joy, which we believe shows life. After the song concludes, the mood shifts and Berkley leaves the scene. Ben remains alone, playing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony somberly, and then finally ending in an aggressive manor. The scene goes black followed by applause.

Art of Seeing: This is shown during the wide pan from the characters to the room. This shows the environment which setting the mood of the video.
Point of View/ Perspective: We used multiple perspectives through out the film, for example there is a view from the sheet music showing the faces of the players. There are also multiple shots of the players from different angles.
Metaphor: This was first shown in a more obvious fashion using Ben and Berkley’s skin tones of black and white, as well as the black and white keys to show unity. This is shown in a less obvious manor by the unity of “Heart and Souls” harmony and melody.
Multi-frames: Through out the film there is a progression of Ben entering the shot to play the piano, Berkley entering the shot to play with him, and Berkley leaving Ben to play alone.
Framing the Image: This was shown when the frame was cropped just to show Ben’s hands playing the piano.
Reduction Form/ Symbol: This is shown when the camera zooms in on the piano keys, emphasizing their black and white form.
Life and Death: This idea was shown in the music choices. Life is identified with the unity of Berkley and Ben with a happy song, death was identified when Ben played alone with a tragic song.
Sound/ Audio: The use of sound is clear through the video with the use of the piano. We also used applause to signify the end of the video.

Final

For my project I wanted to do something centered around me and the fact that I'm a Tampa native. I chose the number 19 because that's my current age. I took a photo of myself in profile to separate the two images. One is the Tampa skyline and the other is a map with the number 19 clearly outlined in the road pattern. 19th street is also visible to the right of the highlighted 19. I'm very happy with the way this one turned out.

Title: Exile
Partner: Morgan Rudd
Medium: Photoshop

For our piece, Morgan and I wanted to capture an isolated personality with a series of objects and symbols. We chose a semi truck's dashboard to frame these things and tie them all together. Through the religious symbol, family photos, condoms, bills, and beer in combination with this setting we gain insight into the life of our fictional character. We are inside his inner sanctum. We are inside his head.

World Records

Jeanne Calment (1875-1997) was the oldest recorded living person. For my project I combined pictures of iconic people who lived and died during Calment's lifetime and a picture of her smoking at the end.
