The central theme of my journal project is exploring the idea of the Trinity with objects that are tangible, as opposed to divine. The Trinity is what Christians believe are the persons that make up God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.) I decided it was best to illustrate these subjects by showing objects in groups of 3 to mimic the three persons of the Trinity. I do not consider myself a religious person but I did go to Catholic school for 4 years and I think it's interesting to reduce such a complex subject into physical objects that explore what different people see as their nature. Some of the images explore these themes in a more classic sense while some border on the sacrilegious because of the objects I chose to illustrate them with. I carefully chose the objects I decided to photograph, taking things like color symbolism and figure/ground into consideration, and used ideas we learned in class to decide how to frame them (most inspiration drawn from the Elements of Art project.) In the final 20 photos I chose you will see themes of enlightenment, grounding, sin, weight, darkness, light, reconciliation, self improvement, simplicity, strength, weakness, subjects that point upward in a literal sense (windows, religious books), objects chosen because of their role in the Bible (palm trees, apples, salt), and objects associated with traditional Christian holidays (jellybeans, white lilies.) I will explain why I chose each singular image and how it relates to my theme in my journal presentation.
